Van life is NOT for everyone and some last longer than others. You will need patience, money and determination.
These are the most common questions we are asked:
How much does it cost to live full time in a van?
Where can you park up with your van?
This varies between countries as the laws are different. In the majority of places it is illegal to park on private property without permission. The UK is well known to be the worst country for facilities for vans and motorhomes. The whole of Europe takes a different stance and is much more welcoming.
Aires are dedicated places for staying overnight and can be found throughout Europe. Many are free, others make a small charge. They often have water, waste and shower facilities.
Roads and laybys vary between countries but generally, if your vehicle is road legal and no signage is erected to tell you otherwise, you can stay the night.
Our favourite park-ups are in Spain, right next to the sea. Usually waste ground, just away from the town but vans are made welcome or at least tolerated.
Where do you go to the toilet?
The majority of vans, even the custom built ones have a chemical toilet onboard so it's no different to being at home in a house. Other than the toilet needs emptying on a regular basis. Added chemicals break down any solids and stop any smells.
Where do you shower?
Living in a van full time, you learn to manage with good strip washes most of the time, however, ours has a built-in shower, as do many vans. We also have the option of an outdoor shower that attaches to the side of the van. A small 12v pump powers it from a large water bucket. Van lifers also learn to keep an eye out for showers at service stations and Aires.
Do you worry about security?
Yes, we are always concerned about security but we don't let it rule our lives. We are always aware of our situation and don't take unnecessary risks.
Do you ever get home sick?
Yes, but you cannot call it home sick as the van is our home. Home is where you make it. Yes, we miss family and friends but we constantly make new friends. We don't miss living in a house with all that goes with it. The freedom of van life far outweighs that. We certainly don't miss the UK. Sadly, our home country offers us nothing.
Do you worry about health?
We would be lying if we said no. We have to be very careful to avoid any injuries or illnesses. We do have very good medical insurance but I hope we never have to use it. We eat healthier living in the van. We never eat fast food or junk.
