Wild camping is not legal in every country and you will read about many different experiences

Spain

Technically​ wild camping in most of Spain is illegal but there are defining rules as to what is 'camping'. It is NOT illegal to sleep in your van, even with the vents open. It is however illegal to camp in your van, by showing that you are camping. This means that nothing should extend from the footprint of your van, such as tables, chairs, steps and awnings.  All four wheels should be on the ground so do not use levellers as this constitutes camping.

Make sure you park in designated spaces, within the box when on car parks.

In many regions of Spain, wild camping is tolerated, especially out of season. Busy resorts such as the Costa del Sol are pretty much no-go areas in the summer. Wild camping can result in hefty, on the spot fines.

Wild camping Vs camp sites

The use of official campsites is a personal choice and will depend on your circumstances. Whilst some people wouldn't dream of wild camping, others much prefer it. A campsite can offer you vital facilities, even if it's an occasional thing, as we do. It's often the chance to get a relaxed shower (although we have one in the van), do the washing and drain the waste tanks.
